East Gate of the Roman Fort Divitia, 4th–5th Century AD
The main gate of the fort faced east towards the enemy. The thick walls of the fortifications fulfill the requirements of a new military strategy: In late antiquity, Roman military camps were no longer constructed with an offensive defense in mind, which included sorties from the camp gates. Rather, the focus now lay on the ability of smaller units holding the forts against large groups of attackers for a sustained period of time.
